The 2009 Arizona Jazz Dance Showcase

The 2009 Arizona Jazz Dance Showcase

Jazz in AZ week kicks off with the Arizona Jazz Dance Showcase, Oct. 7-8. The one-act concert presented in the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre includes four pieces choreographed by members of the UA dance faculty.

“Rats” is a quartet for men dancing to songs made famous by the Las Vegas rat pack of Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop. Choreographer is Douglas Nielsen (see our feature on Nielsen in Dance Reviews).

Mia Michaels creates a vortex of dance athleticism for an ensemble cast in “Against the Current.”

Michael Williams introduces movement percussion with men and women rocking the stage in a sound collage he calls “Rhythm Schism.”

Sam Watson combines burlesque and vaudeville in “The Big Put On,” a solo performance of contemporary dance.

Spanish beauty provides dance counterpoint in the lyrical “Sabor a Mi,” choreographed by Susan Williams.

Kelsey Davis rounds out the program with a fun ensemble piece, “Modern Man.”

Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $16 general admission, $14 UA employees, seniors and military, $12 students. For details, 621-3363, the fine Arts box office, or online a www.cfa.arizona.edu/dance
