NOSSA BOSSA NOVA

NOSSA BOSSA NOVA

“Standards” and “Beyond Bossa Nova: A Tribute to Elis Regina”

Chef Records

Fans of Tucson’s own Brazilian duo, vocalist Theresa Levy in tandem with husband Mike Levy’s guitar, bass and percussion, will find lots to enjoy in this twin CD combo. Both albums were recorded with many of the same local musicians, adding their support to the feathery bossa nova sound this couple creates. Included are Ed Delucia, guitar, Amilcar Guevara, piano, and Alejandro Canelos, drums.

“Standards” includes all the most popular bossa nova hits in America that everyone will recognize, from “Desafinado” and “Dindi” to “Corcovado” and “Manha de Carnival.” Even if you don’t remember the titles, you will be humming the melodies.

Wikipedia assures us Elis Regina was one of the world’s most popular singers, selling more than 80 million albums before an unfortunate drug overdose in January, 1982, took her life prematurely at age 36. She was so popular, her funeral had to be held in a soccer stadium seating 100,000 adoring fans. The tribute album contains 13 tracks associated with Regina’s career.

For the provincial Yankee who enjoys the music’s tropical sensuality, “Standard” has the welcome feeling of a refreshing breeze. Those who want more from their bossa nova moments will find songs on the tribute album that require more careful listening.  The unfamiliarity can be appealing, for most of this Brazilian songbook is unknown in the United States.

Either way, a tall tropical drink is the suggested accompaniment. And if a set of bongo drums is handy, so much the better.
