JEFF KASHIWA TO LIGHT UP OUR LABOR DAY WEEKEND

JEFF KASHIWA TO LIGHT UP OUR LABOR DAY WEEKEND

Fans of the Rippingtons will feel their ears tickling to know the smooth jazz band’s former tenor sax player, Jeff Kashiwa, is headed to Tucson with his own band for a concert presented by the Tucson Jazz Society at Loews Ventana Canyon on Sunday, Sept. 6.

Kashiwa scored a Number One chart hit in 2000 on his first album, watching “Hyde Park (the Ahh, Ooh song)” push his prominence as a soloist and bandleader. In the decade before that, his lyrical playing with the Rippingtons were making that band famous with such world-wide favorites as “Welcome to the St. James Club” and “Curves Ahead.”

These days Kashiwa, who plays mostly tenor sax, takes great care on his website to make it clear he wants to play all kinds of jazz now. Funk, Latin and reggae flavors – as well as classic straight ahead jazz -- are in his latest release, “Play.” He also pitched in some mighty licks on last year’s “The Sax Pack” recorded in company with reedy colleagues Steve Cole and Kim Waters.

“While I’ve always been inspired by great melodic saxophonists like Stan Getz…I’m also fascinated by the way movie actors talk about their craft,” Kashiwa says. “No matter how successful they are and how happy they should be with their previous success, they’re always more focused on what’s next. It’s the same with me.”

Find out what’s next for Kashiwa when he plays this Loews Ventana Canyon gig. The music starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 general admission, $20 members of TJS, $10 students and military. Premium tables for two by the bandstand are $175, for TJS members, $150.

Tickets are available at all Bookman’s book stores, by calling 800-595-4849 or the TJS office, 520-903-1265. For additional details and sound bites,www.tucsonjazz.org
