Award-winning blues and soul vocalist Janiva
Magness will celebrate the release of her new Alligator Records CD, “Stronger
For It,” in her 8 p.m. concert Saturday, March 10, at Plaza Palomino, 2290 N.
Swan Road.
Long a charismatic Tucson
favorite known for her electrifying live shows, Magness is now counted among
the premier blues and R&B singers in the world. Her voice possesses an
earthy, raw honesty born from her life experience.
Mojo calls her "One of the
most fiery and original vocalists in contemporary blues and soul...thoughtful,
inventive and almost unerringly on the money."
Last year, Magness was
nominated for four Blues Music Awards: B.B. King Entertainer of the Year; Album
of the Year (“The Devil Is An Angel Too”); Contemporary Blues Female Artist of
the Year and Contemporary Blues Album of the Year (“The Devil Is An Angel
Too”).
She won the coveted 2009 Blues
Music Award for B.B. King Entertainer of the Year (she is only the second woman
to ever win this award, Koko Taylor being the first) and for Contemporary Blues
Female Artist of the Year, an honor she also received in 2006 and 2007.
For the first time ever Magness
has recorded three of her own songs, which are introduced on this new album,
including the title track. The rest of her story on the full release, “Stronger
For It,” is told through her inspired reinventions of songs by Tom Waits, Grace
Potter, Shelby Lynne, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Matthew Sweet, Buddy and Julie Miller
and others.
Janiva Magness brings her touring
band and her new recording to the Plaza Palomino, 2290 N. Swan Road, on
Saturday, March 12, for an 8 p.m. concert and CD release party. Tickets are $20
in advance, $23 at the door. For details and reservations, 520-319-9966, or
